DAO Deficiency

Diamine oxidase or DAO is an enzyme naturally present in the gut. Its main function is to metabolise the histamine we ingest from many of the foods we eat.

DAO Deficiency occurs when this enzyme is less active. This means that the histamine is not metabolised properly so it is absorbed through the intestinal lining (epithelium) and accumulates in the blood. This, in turn, can trigger various symptoms which can be severe and pharmacologically hard to treat such as: migraine, fibromyalgia, atopic skin, digestive problems and ADHD.

Our DR Healthcare business is a world leader in the dietary control of DAO Deficiency. With more than 15 years R&D experience and over 100 patents covering the use and application of DAO. Their biologically produced enzyme, adiDAO® is aimed at treating DAO Deficiency and its associated symptoms. It is suitable for a range of applications:

  • food supplements
  • medicines and foods for special medical use
  • adding to solid or liquid food matrices
